After both of yesterday’s quarter-finals went to penalties, you’d be mad to miss what today has in store.

Will Ronaldo be handed a starting berth after his young replacement Gonçalo Ramos scored a hat-trick in his first ever start for Portugal?

Can England keep Kylian Mbappé and France at bay?

It’s all up for grabs as the final inches ever closer.

Got any interesting stats or facts?

Watch out for the veterans! With his goal against Switzerland, Pepe became the oldest ever player to score in the knockout stages at a World Cup at the age of 39 years and 283 days.

While the spotlight is placed firmly on Mbappé ahead of England’s match with France, the Three Lions would be advised not to forget the creative danger posed by Antoine Griezmann. With 15 chances created in only four games so far, the Atlético Madrid man has created the most in a single World Cup in France’s history ahead of Franck Ribéry in 2006 with 14 created across seven total matches.

How have the four teams fared in the quarter-finals?

This is somewhat unknown territory for Portugal, as they’ve only ever made the quarter-final once before. That was back in 2006, when they lost in the semi-final to France.

Yet it’s nowhere near as new as for Morocco, who have a very limited record at World Cups. This is only the sixth tournament they have ever qualified for, having exited at the group stage in 1970, 1994, 1998 and 2018, and only made the Round of 16 once before in 1986.

France have lost two quarter-finals, in 1938 and 2014, and the rest of their record suggests it’s all or nothing for Les Bleus. They’ve been knocked out at the group stage six times, but have never lost a semi-final, winning the World Cup in 1998 and 2018.

The quarter-final stage has often been England’s limit at the World Cup, having been knocked out on six occasions at this stage. That said, they have reached the semi-finals twice – in 1990 and 2018 – and are part of a select group of countries that have won the tournament, having lifted the trophy in 1966.

Have you got a player to watch?

Fiorentina Sofiyan Amrabat was the engine behind Morocco’s unlikely victory over Spain in the last round, and he’s definitely a player to look out for today.

The midfield destroyer recovered the ball nine times in that match, winning seven duels and regaining possession for his side no less than six times in the final third of the pitch.

After the match, the 26-year-old broke down in tears, revealing he’d played through the pain barrier after having suffered an injury, and you can bet that it’ll be the same again in the quarter-final with Portugal.

An immense performance from an immense player.
