Anil Murthy insists he resigned as Valencia chief executive last month.

Murthy has denied he was sacked by owner Peter Lim and says he chose to step down due to the backlash from the publishing of secret recordings of him being critical of Valencia players and several LaLiga identities.

He told Channel News Asia: “On the streets, people in cars yell all kinds of insults at you. When you cross the street, they yell at you.

"In restaurants, people come up to you (and say): 'Hey, go home, what are you doing here?' It is daily harassment.

"I have a 15-year-old son and others tell him: 'It's your fault, you all come to Valencia'... he tries to remain calm, but after a while he gets angry too.

“When I start a project… I really like to finish it. We went through COVID-19, lowering the debt and we were close to fixing things to start building again. And we were getting there.

"It is not an easy decision for me because for me they are pending issues. But then you ask yourself, can I be effective? Or am I making it worse?

"We already discussed (he and his wife) that it was time for him to resign and move on, because that was not a life .

"You cannot walk the streets. I am afraid to go to the supermarket because people come… it is not that I am afraid for my life... so many years of living this life… it was enough."
