Angel Gomes has admitted it would be difficult to turn down a return to former club Manchester United in the future.

The 24-year-old was never afforded an extended run in the United side as a youngster, having come through the academy ranks before signing for Lille in 2020, immediately spending a season on loan in Portugal with Boavista.

His development in recent years was rewarded with a maiden call-up to the senior England squad for September's UEFA Nations League fixtures against the Republic of Ireland and Finland and, after making his debut last month, Gomes was named in interim manager Lee Carsley's roster for clashes with Greece and Finland.

While his improvement in France has been impressive, Gomes revealed to The Times he would find it hard to reject a return to Old Trafford if the opportunity arose.

He said: "As amazing as it would be, after finding happiness abroad I know [playing in the Premier League] is not the be-all and end-all.

"There'll always be that sentimental soft spot, so of course it'd be difficult to say no."

Gomes previously admitted it was a 'difficult' decision to leave United but also reiterated his departure was necessary to progress further as a player, having made only ten senior appearances before leaving on a free transfer in 2020.

He has since played European football with Lille and has featured in both of their Champions League games so far this season, helping the Ligue 1 side to three points with a win and a draw. He was sent off for two bookable offences in the 2-0 defeat to Sporting CP.

The midfielder earned his first start for England last month against Finland and will hope for more opportunities over the next week or so as the Three Lions aim to take the top spot in Group 2 of Nations League B.
