Ange shoots down Aussie urban myth on Celtic media

Ange Postecoglou is still busy doing his rounds with the Australian media and in this one on the Rowey’s Sports Show – Talking Adelaide Ange talks about keeping a watchful eye on the Aussie market, that perfect send-off for Tommy Rogic and has more laughs about trying to understand the Glaswegian accent.

Asked about the doubting Celtic media who called him Ange Postecog-who when he was first announced as Celtic manager, Ange made sure that this was inaccuracy was corrected, although you get the impression that it’s a common misconception in Australia and one that does the Celtic media a disservice. There were maybe one or two posts – not on this site I hasten to add – about Ange not having the necessary coaching certificates to manage in Europe but these early concerns were nothing to do with Ange and in fact merited an airing in public as answers were sought and were forthcoming from Celtic.

The doubters were not in the Celtic media but came from the ranks of the hacks and the former players now pundits, Hugh Keevins and Kris Boyd being prime examples but there were plenty of others.

“I’ve come from the other side of the world; they’ve got no idea (who I am),” Ange said. “They don’t see Australia as a sort of bastion of football with the pedigree in terms of managers – I kind of understood that. To be fair, I’ve had some fair whacks in Australia as well, mate, from the media there. So, I was well schooled in dealing with it.

“So, it’s never really bothered me, you know. For me, it’s more about you get an opportunity; then, it’s up to me to dispel any doubts that people may have about me. The initial bit, that’s just par for the course. You’ve got to go in there, and even if you’ve come in on a white horse and everyone wants you, it doesn’t guarantee success either.

“You’ve got to make sure you deliver when given the opportunity, and that’s always been my focus.”

But the Celtic media cannot be accused of being anything other that fully supportive of Ange and he confirmed this point speaking to the Celtic fan media after the game on Saturday afternoon.

Ange was also asked about his interest in ever going back to manage the Socceroos – ‘If the FFA (Football Australia) rang you today and said the job is yours, come on back, come on Ange we need you…’…Ange replied: “They probably won’t get me today, I’ve got a busy day. It would go through to my messages, then I would deal with it then.”

Asked what’s next Ange stated: “Next? Well if you had asked me 12 months ago I probably wouldn’t have said this, so we are Champions now and in the Champions League which will be enormous.

“You are playing against some of the best clubs in the world, but who is to know mate? I’ve never been one to plan a goal in my life because if I did I probably would have surpassed it 20 odd years ago. Every next step gives you a chance to be part of something special.”
