Heung-min Son has had a difficult season, and hasn’t quite hit the heights he has in previous years, with only three Premier League goals to his name this campaign.
But Ange Postecoglou doesn’t think he is finished yet, and has warned about writing him off. “I don’t think he’s done. I’d be wary about writing him off, we certainly haven’t.
“I still feel like he’s (there) from a physical output and the quality he has. And certainly from a mentality point of view, I haven’t seen (a drop off).
“I still think Sonny’s got a hell of a lot of quality. And from a physical standpoint, the way he looks after himself, I don’t see his ability diminishing, just due to the age factor at the moment, I don’t see that.”
In fairness to Son, whilst his goals have dropped off, his overall numbers haven’t. He has three goals and four assists in 10 Premier League starts, which is definitely a healthy return.
Last season he scored 17 league goals, and got ten assists, but Ange mentioned the fact that he’s struggled with fitness this year: “I think a lot of it is just consistent game time, because again, he’s had a bit of a disruptive start this year. He’s had a couple of setbacks where he hasn’t played regularly, and I think with Sonny, what you find is the more regularly he plays, the more the increase in his output.”
Last campaign he managed to start 34 league games, only missing four games all season. This season he has already missed three league games and has struggled to stay fit.
But Ange was steadfast in his support for Son, and believes he will get back to his best. He should be fit to start tomorrow against Bournemouth.
