Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou insists that Cristian Romero is fully focused on Tottenham end of season despite the centre-half saying that he would “love to play in Spain in the future”.

In an interview with Argentinian reporter Gaston Edul, Romero was quoted as saying: “After the league finishes, let’s see. I still have not spoken with my agent but I am open to anything. In my head it’s always about growing and going to new places to keep growing.”

Romero’s quotes come ahead of Tottenham’s visit to Anfield on Sunday in what has been a poor season for the north London side. They sit 16th in the Premier League table, losing 18 matches, while Liverpool could win the title with a win or even a draw.

But the Australian insisted that Romero’s comments should not be read too much into.

“I have not read through the report too closely but it is like me mate, if you get asked a question you have got to answer it and if you ask me a lot of questions about my future you would probably get some great headlines out of that as well,” he said.

“What is important right now is not Cristian Romero’s future or anyone else’s future, it is that we have an unbelievable opportunity to do something special at this football club and for me and everyone internally that is all we are concentrating on.”

Tottenham’s injury problems this season means they have turned to teenagers on multiple occasions, including Archie Gray.

The Englishman has only started one match since the game against Fulham on 16 March, however, following the returns of Micky van de Ven and Romero.

Despite this, Postcoglou says that Gray will see significant minutes before the end of this season.

“If you had said at the start of the year that Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray and Mikey Moore would have played the amount of time they have as teenagers, I would not have said that that’s impossible.

“They’ve played a lot, they’ve played a lot because they’ve earned it, obviously due to opportunity as well, but Archie will play. He’ll play even between now and the end of the year, he’ll play significant minutes. Just the games haven’t worked out the way we wanted them to, and we needed to get game time with other guys.”

Arsenal’s 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace in midweek means that Liverpool only need a draw on Sunday to seal the Premier League trophy but childhood Liverpool fan Postecoglou insists that he is keen to spoil the party.

“I’m almost a 60-year-old adult, I have gotten past my boyhood crushes. I supported them when I was younger but I have well and truly moved on since then.”

Despite wanting to stop Liverpool winning the league, the Australian was full of praise for Arne Slot.

“He is an outstanding manager and he picked up an outstanding team. They have been brilliant in the league this year.

“They have had their best players playing all the time and at a really high level and that is a credit to Arne, his coaching group and to the players themselves.”
