In his Friday afternoon presser, Ange Postecoglu has given an injury update that makes for seriously tough reading for everyone associated with Tottenham Hotspur.
He has confirmed that defensive trio Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, and Ben Davies are all set to miss the rest of the month with their current injuries. We have not seen van de ven nor Romero since the defeat to Chelsea on the 8th of December, whilst the last time we saw Davies was in the loss at AFC Bournemouth on the 5th of December.
Fans had been hopeful that they would be back for the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final at home to Liverpool, but we can safely rule that out now. In fact, it may even be touch and go for the second leg, on the 6th of February, given they are going to miss the entirety of January.
They will definitely miss the game against Newcastle United, that aforementioned first leg with Liverpool, Tamworth away in the FA Cup, Arsenal and Everton away, Hoffenheim away in the Europa League, Leicester City at home, and Elfsborg at home in the Europa League.
As it stands, the only available out and out centre back the club have at their disposal is Radu Dragusin, who is 1) not fully fit anyway, as of last weekend anyway, and 2) has clearly struggled in this set up regardless. It looks as if Spurs are going to have to continue relying on 18-year old midfielder Archie Gray during his first top flight season.
That is, unless they begin to at least act like a serious club, and bring in defensive reinforcements. We have seen links to central defenders, such as Fikayo Tomori from AC Milan, Abdukodir Khusanov from RC Lens, and Ko Itakura from Borussia Monchengladbach - amongst other names.
We have also seen Destiny Udogie be ruled out for at least six weeks, meaning Ange is without his first choice goalkeeper, both first choice central defenders, and first choice left back. Plus his back up central defender. Oh, and one of his first choice midfielders, Rodrigo Bentancur, is suspended for the game at home to Newcastle - two games after returning from a seven game domestic ban.
Even if Spurs do bring in signings in that area, they definitely won't be in time for tomorrow's game, and almost surely not in time for the game against Liverpool next week. Pretty concerning stuff all round.
