Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson recalled his time working with Marco Silva.
The Scotland international discussed his relationship with his former manager ahead of the Merseyside derby on Sunday.
The Reds will face Silva’s Everton side at Goodison Park as they try to keep pace at the top of the table.
Robertson credits his opposing manager in the derby for helping him develop as a player during Silva’s spell at Hull City in 2017.
“He was big for me,” the Liverpool full back conceded ahead of the match. “When he came in, he improved all of us at Hull. You could see that by the results we got.”
“He brought me along defensively, probably going forward as well even if it was a short space of time.”
“It was the first time I had worked for a foreign manager so I think it stood me in good stead to come in here and work under this manager. It was good to get a feel for the foreign way and I think it helped me probably settle in a wee bit here.”
Robertson recalled a brief meeting with his former boss just moments after Divock Origi’s goal defeated Everton back in December.
“I had a short word with him and just said thanks for what he done for me and things like that,” the left-back said.
“It was not the best time to speak to somebody when we score a 96th-minute winner! He was obviously gutted, but he came over to me and shook my hand and it was appreciated.”
“He’s still somebody I can talk to but when it comes to the game, it is the same when you play against your friends.”
The 24 year old hopes Silva’s familiarity with him does not become a liability for Liverpool.
“He does his research and I am part of that research now, probably! He looks at every player his team are against and he can point out strengths and weaknesses they have.”
“It is something we need to be prepared for. Everton will want to get one over on us and we want to get one over on them.”
