Goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne was the hero for Australia as they booked their place at the Qatar World Cup after beating Peru on penalties.
In their intercontinental playoff on Monday night, nothing could separate the two nations in 120 minutes.
It resulted in a nerve-wracking penalty to decide who will be competing in the World Cup.
But just before full time in extra-time, Australia manager Graham Arnold decided to substitute goalkeeper Mat Ryan for Sydney FC’s Redmayne.
It proved to be an absolute masterstroke.
. It’s something we’ve seen goalkeepers do previously but not to this extent!
It worked.
Luis Advincula hit the post before Redmayne saved from Alex Valera in sudden death to hand Australia the victory.
What a hero.
But another piece of pure sh*thousery by Redmayne went relatively unnoticed… until now.
Like most goalkeepers in a penalty shootout these days, Peru’s Pedro Gallese had notes on all of Australia’s spot-kick takers on his water bottle. These instructions would advise him on which way to dive.
It seemed to work instantly as he saved brilliantly from Martin Boyle in the opening penalty of the shootout.
But Redmayne wasn’t having any of it.
One fan claimed that the Australia goalkeeper saw the bottle and threw it into the stands leaving Gallese searching for it.
And footage has emerged of that very moment.
You can see Redmayne with a bottle in his hand placing it over the advertising boards so Gallese can’t find it.
Amazing.
Gallese failed to save another penalty and Redmayne became the hero.
Incredible, incredible sh*thousery from Andrew Redmayne.
