Andrés Iniesta has spoken about the deep depression he suffered when he was at the peak of his career as a Barcelona player.

The trigger for his suffering was when his close friend, Espanyol player Dani Jarque, died of a heart attack at the age of 26 in 2009.

The midfielder, now with Japanese club Vissel Kobe, looked back on those days in ‘The Wild Project’ podcast.

“When I was struggling with depression, the best time of the day was when I took my pills and went to bed. I lost the will to live. I hugged my wife, but it was like hugging a pillow. You don’t feel anything,” Iniesta said in words reported by Mundo Deportivo.

Iniesta went on to admit that he is still going to therapy. “I still go to therapy because I need to fix myself. I like to listen to professionals talk about mental illness and depression. Over time, life teaches you that depression and mental illness can affect anyone. It’s not about material things. I can have all the cars in the world and everything I want, but it’s still hard to deal with life’s problems,” he admits.
