Andreas Christensen is going to leave Chelsea for Barcelona on a free transfer this summer, and in his homeland there are some who have questioned the logic of that move.

He’s a key player for Thomas Tuchel, and over the last couple of years has really cemented his place as a first team regular for Chelsea, with trophies now accumulating at a steady pace. Why give that up to go to a Barca team midway through a rebuild?

“It is always great to switch to FC Barcelona, and normal circumstances also a step up, but as times are – when you switch from the Champions League winners to FC Barcelona, which is not the FC Barcelona we have known about the last 20-25 years – I would say that it is a step down,” said TV pundit Niels Christian Frederiksen in quotes picked up by Sport Witness.

“Personally, I think he was in a good place, and he should have stayed at Chelsea. Chelsea are a better team than FC Barcelona, and it is also a bigger club.”

That is exactly what we have felt. You can’t question anyone who moves to Barcelona to play football too deeply, but it does feel like he’s giving up at Chelsea just as things have finally fallen into place.

Yes Xavi looks to be building something impressive there, but Chelsea are a team that’s winning right now, and after years battling to get his chance, it seems a shame to walk away now.
