The game was only three minutes old at the Estadio Universitario when veteran striker Gignac produced a moment of pure magic.

From all of 30 yards, the former France international whipped a right-footed free-kick beyond the reach of goalkeeper Raúl Gudiño.

Gignac almost put the game to bed with 20 minutes to go, but Gudiño produced an excellent diving save to repel the 35-year-old’s header.

Chivas should have drawn level when substitute Uriel Antuna found himself free in front of goal only for the winger to somehow contrive to hit the woodwork when it seemed easier to score.

Tigres made Los Rojiblancos pay for that miss almost immediately as they broke and Jesús Dueñas cut the ball back from the byline for Gignac to fire home his second of the night.

Antuna atoned somewhat for his earlier miss by forcing Guido Pizarro into an own goal to make the final few minutes interesting.

Tigres held on, however, to move themselves up to third in the Apertura table and enhance their hopes of progressing directly to the quarter-finals.

Chivas, on the other hand, must now wait on other results to see if and how they can still secure a spot in the repechaje in the final round of matches next weekend.
