Manchester United’s Andre Onana has had two of his stops nominated for Premier League Save of the season.
The Cameroonian has endured two error-strewn years since joining the club in 2023 from Inter Milan.
He has made numerous high profile mistakes and for that reason, Ruben Amorim is reportedly interested in signing competition for the goalkeeper.
Strangely, Onana actually made quite a positive start to the season and his performances in the first three months of the campaign were generally praised.
It was when Erik ten Hag was sacked at the end of October, that his form began to spiral.
The club’s official website announced that “Manchester United shot-stopper Andre Onana is one of six goalkeepers in the running to win the Premier League’s Save of the Season award for 2024/25.”
His first effort on the list was his incredible double-save at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace in September from Eddie Nketiah and Ismaila Sarr.
It clearly impressed not only United supporters as the stop won the save of the month award and demonstrated the incredible reactions that he is capable of.
Onana produced a solid save from Nketiah but it was the outstanding block after from Sarr that really caught the eye.
The keeper appears once again on the list for his outstanding stop against Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap at Portman Road in November.
In another fine example of his reactions, “he extended his right arm to bat away Delap’s first-time effort from point-blank range, upon the striker being found by Leif Davis’s threaded ball across the face of goal.”
Once again, the save won November’s save of the month.
He has often been criticised this season for his lack of reactions and his inability to get down to efforts that most Premier League keepers would be able to stop.
Nonetheless, Onana did finish joint seventh in the Premier League Golden Glove race with nine clean sheets, the same as Liverpool’s Alisson Becker.
In fact, winners, Arsenal’s David Raya and Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels only kept four more shut outs in the entire season.
Onana will be competing against Raya, Chelsea’s Robert Sanchez, Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez, Newcastle United’s Martin Dubravka, AFC Bournemouth’s Kepa Arrizabalaga and Tottenham Hotspur’s Guglielmo Vicario for the award.
