Popular CBS Pundit Jamie Carragher has outlined one of the key differences between Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola and his Italian counterpart at Real Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti, suggesting that one allows his players much more freedom on the pitch.

Ancelotti and Guardiola will meet in the dugout when Real Madrid host Man City at the Bernabeu for the Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday night, kicking off at 20.00 BST.

With four Champions League titles to his name, two with Milan and two with Madrid, Ancelotti is the most successful coach in the competition’s history.

Guardiola, meanwhile, has three and is the joint-second-most successful coach in the Champions League, alongside Zinedine Zidane and Bob Paisley.

Carragher believes that, one day, Guardiola will go on to exceed the Italian’s current record.

Before that claim, however, the former Liverpool and England defender suggested that Ancelotti allows his players more freedom on the pitch compared to the ‘micromanagement’ of Guardiola.

“The great thing about both managers is that it shows you can win in different ways. I mean Pep Guardiola sort of micromanages his team in some ways, whereas Ancelotti almost lets the players have a little bit more freedom, not set to one style of football, he adapts to the players.

“Carlo Ancelotti now on four Champions Leagues, I think one day Pep Guardiola will surpass him.”
