The left-back position at Real Madrid appeared set to undergo a big change this summer with Alphonso Davies widely linked with a transfer.
In the end, however, Real Madrid did not get the Canadian defender over the line as Bayern Munich refused to accept a lower fee for the youngster.
Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia thus started the new season as Carlo Ancelotti’s preferred options in the department with the Frenchman taking the starting role. Both players, however, have seen regular minutes in tandem.
While Mendy began the season as the manager’s preferred option at left-back, Garcia only had to wait until match day 2 to get his first start of the season.
Benefitted by the Frenchman’s suspension, the 25-year-old played all 90 minutes against Real Valladolid, dishing out a strong performance with two key passes and 12 defensive actions.

As revealed in a recent report by AS now, Garcia has gained more importance for Ancelotti. The Italian tactician trusts the left-back more than ever before especially after his strong start to the season.
The coming games, thus, will see the Spaniard receive more prominence than he has in recent games, especially given the situation in the squad.
Real Madrid are plagued by injuries. With Eder Militao, Ferland Mendy, Eduardo Camavinga, Jude Bellingham, Dani Ceballos, and Aurelien Tchouameni all out through injury, the manager faced a big dilemma in defence.
Mendy’s injury is not as serious as initially anticipated and his participation against Real Sociedad is not ruled out. Given that the manager would rather err on the side of caution, however, Garcia could well get the crucial start after the hiatus.
