Legendary Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti explains why he is ‘resistant to the idea’ of being in charge of an international team, jokes about Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappé and ‘when Real Madrid get tired of me.’

The tactician turned 65 last month and recently signed a new contract with the Merengues to June 2026.

He spoke via video link at the Giffoni Film Festival in Salerno, which is an annual celebration bringing children towards the world of cinema.

Asked if he has yet thought about his retirement, Ancelotti used his usual sense of humour and raised eyebrow.

“I don’t know when I will stop. When Real Madrid get tired of me, then I’ll have to think of what to do next,” he smiled.

There had been a proposal to become the coach of the Brazil national team, while Italy could also look to him in future, but it doesn’t seem to be on his radar right now.

“I am resistant towards the idea of being an international coach, because I prefer the daily work at club level.”

It is his second stint with Real Madrid after a period from 2013 to 2015, returning in 2021.

Last season he won LaLiga and the Champions League, confirming his status as the most successful coach in the history of the European tournament.

However, there were flops too, most notably his short-lived spells at Juventus, Napoli and Everton.

“Those were not failures, they were experiences,” insisted Ancelotti.

He also watched EURO 2024, with both current Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham and future signing Kylian Mbappé.

“Spain deserved to win the trophy, they had more talent. It was a European Championship with little intensity, because the players with the most quality were tired when it started.

“Bellingham was a surprise, but he is genetically a champion. Training can improve and add, but you need the genetics to really be a champion.”

“We’ll see, I’ll squeeze him in somewhere…”
