“I didn’t win much as Napoli and Everton, that’s true [laughs]. I always want to work well and win.

“But I don’t think I have to prove anything to anyone. We have a great squad here with young players who are desperate to improve and eager to impress.

“That’s a great mix for any coach to have.”

On already being through

“We’re up against a side playing very well. Not just results. They play a good brand of football and both teams want to finish top of the group.

“But we’re at home in front of our fans so that will be a boost and I expect an interesting game. We want to reach the final of this competition.

“But we aren’t looking past this one to the derby. That’s on Sunday. We’ll have time after Inter to prepare for it.”

On David Alaba

“He’s a very clever player. He has a high football IQ and wanted to play here so much.”

After Raphaël Varane’s recent interview suggested he couldn’t savour Champions League wins due to the demands at Real

“Well, the history and tradition of this club is to keep winning. We’re the most successful club in the world.

“You play for Real Madrid, you know how this works. We celebrate after every triumph of course but we can’t just be happy with that and you must look ahead to winning the next one.

“That’s what the club and supporters demand.”
