One of the big stories of the summer transfer market was Roma signing Tammy Abraham from Chelsea for €40 million. This was a deal that not many would have expected or could have predicted to take place at the beginning of the summer, however, Steven Sciavillo of Chiesa di Totti says that it was a real signal of intent from the Giallorossi management.

When Jose Mourinho was brought in unexpectedly to replace Paulo Fonseca, he requested certain signings, one of which being the Premier League talent. Various attackers have found it hard to remain in Stamford Bridge in recent years due to the lack of guaranteed playing time; when Romelu Lukaku was signed from Inter, this pushed Abraham further back in the pecking order, and the Portuguese manager took advantage of the opportunity to convince him of this new adventure in Rome. Considering Roma‘s success with bringing in other Premier League talent (Chris Smalling, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Pedro) this deal made sense; even more so due to the Englishman’s age.

At 23 years of age, he has an impressive all-around game that many did not expect upon his arrival to the Capital. He is proving that he is much more than just a goalscorer – he can win aerial duels with his height, use his speed to create dangerous opportunities on the counter, will help back on defense, dribble past opponents, and, maybe most importantly, he has the vision to make well-timed passes to play teammates in on goal. Furthermore, Abraham has also bought into the project and the club which is encouraging; he was even caught singing Grazie Roma, the club’s anthem, with the supporters ahead of the fixture against Udinese.

While it has to be mentioned that Chelsea have a buy-back clause after two seasons, Abraham has had a great start to life in Rome, and he will be looking to further impress in his first Derby della Capitale against Lazio.
