It is no secret that Manchester City must sign a quality right-back this summer. Currently, Matheus Nunes, Rico Lewis, and possibly Manuel Akanji will share the right-back duties for Pep Guardiola’s side next season. One player who had emerged as Manchester City’s top target for the right-back position was Newcastle United’s versatile full-back Tino Livramento. But it has always seemed that it could be almost impossible for City to sign Livramento this summer. He’s too important to Eddie Howe’s side and the Magpies are under no financial pressure to sell one of their prized assets.
Now a new report from Craig Hope for the Daily Mail has emerged that states that Newcastle United will not sell Tino Livramento, no matter the price. If that report is proven to be correct, Manchester City will have to look elsewhere to sign a right-back this summer.
In an exclusive Q&A segment in the Daily Mail, Craig Hope was asked about Manchester City’s interest in signing Tino Livramento. Hope explained that City maintain an interest in signing Livramento. Furthermore, Hope reports that Manchester City are willing to spend at least £65 million to sign him. But, Hope further reports that Newcastle wouldn’t accept £165 million to sell Livramento. Hope also reports that Newcastle consider Tino Livramento unsellable. Livramento is considered a key part of Newcastle’s future due to his age, talent, versatility and potential. Lastly, Hope reports that Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall consider playing under Eddie Howe as the best move for their development.
No matter what happens this summer, Manchester City simply must sign a right-back. Pep Guardiola’s side won’t want to enter next season with a void in their squad. That isn’t a knock on Matheus Nunes, Rico Lewis or Manuel Akanji. That trio just don’t seem capable of playing in such an important position for an entire season. Now that City’s number-one target in Tino Livramento is seemingly off the table that shouldn’t change City’s thinking this summer. They must sign a right-back. Preferably a quality one.
Who that player could be remains to be seen. It simply cannot be a case of Livramento or bust for City. To enter the 25/26 season with a void in their squad is fraught with danger for Manchester City. They will not want to enter a new season with a weakness. That’s the task in front of Hugo Viana and company to find a quality right-back. It seemingly won’t be Tino Livramento so who City shift attention to fill the right-back void is a story to monitor over the remainder of the summer transfer window.
