Former Barcelona head coach Xavi has this week moved to send a message of appreciation to a one-time member of his midfield ranks at the club.
The player in question? Sergi Roberto.
This, of course, comes after confirmation was at last forthcoming that the versatile Roberto, who has spent his entire senior career to date on Barcelona’s books, will not be offered a new contract for next season.
The 32-year-old does not feature in the plans of new Blaugrana head coach Hansi Flick, and will therefore be allowed to depart on a free transfer.
Messages of thanks have since poured in for Roberto, who, despite having long split opinion owing to his abilities as a player, could never have had his commitment to the Barca cause called into question.
And, as alluded to above, adding his name to the list of the Spanish international’s well-wishers late last night was Xavi Hernández.
Roberto’s biggest advocate during his time in the Camp Nou dugout, Xavi took to the comments section of the player’s farewell post, to write:
‘An example for everyone!!’
