Paco Alcácer returned from a six-game absence in the 89th minute in BVB’s 3-0 win over VfL Wolfsburg after overcoming Achilles and muscular problems. But the Spaniard’s injury that coincided with a scoring drought is not a reason for Sebastian Kehl, head of the professional player department, to pursue a winter transfer.
Borussia Dortmund made a conscious decision to start the season with Alcácer and Mario Götze. “This striker duo helped us to a 81-goal season. They split the time on that position and it was successful,” the 39-year-old told ZDF.
BVB added talent and depth to their attack with Thorgan Hazard and Julian Brandt but did not insist on another out-and-out striker: “Lucien Favre prefers a certain kind of football. He has a different approach, which made it OK for us. Nonetheless, there is a lot of attacking power in our ranks.
However, there are questions about Alcácer’s ability to stay healthy. The 26-year-old is injury-prone and his match rhythm is often disrupted by injuries. “I believe that every big club asks hard questions. We’re always self-critical. We’ll also do it this time,” Kehl said on the potential outlook of winter transfers, adding: “If we see a possibility and see the necessity to act during the winter then we’ll do that. But at the moment I don’t see the need.”
