Ruben Amorim told Manchester United supporters that “the good times are coming” in a speech on the pitch at Old Trafford.

United beat Aston Villa 2-0 in their final game of the campaign thanks to goals from Amad and Christian Eriksen.

But they end the campaign in 15th position and without European football next season after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham.

It is the worst ever Premier League campaign for the club, finishing on 42 points and losing 18 of their 38 games.

Amorim apologised to the fans for what he called a “disaster season” but vowed things will get better.

““First of all, I want to apologise for this season,” he said. “I know you are really disappointed with me and with the team.

“Second thing, I want to say thank you, we are very grateful for your support during the season, I know it was very hard.

“Now we have to make a choice, or stay stuck in the past. Because this season is in the past, it’s over. We can fight each other or we can stick together and move forward.

“Six months ago, in my first three games in charge, with two victories and one draw, I said to you the storm is coming.

“Today, after this disaster season, I want to tell you that the good days are coming.

“If there is one club that proved in the past that they can overcome any situation, any disaster, it’s our club, it’s Manchester United.”

Amorim also took the opportunity to apologise to his players, admitting he has “not been fair” with them at times during the campaign.

“I want to say sorry also to my players,” he continued. “Sometimes I was not fair, but I’ve always tried to be honest with you guys. Thank you very much, see you next season.”
