Ruben Amorim has admitted his struggling Manchester United side are ‘starving for leaders on the pitch’.

Manchester United travel to Liverpool this weekend aiming to end a run of four consecutive losses. The Red Devils are 14th in the Premier League after their worst-ever start to a campaign and just seven points above the relegation places.

Amorim arrived as a replacement for Erik ten Hag in November but has failed to oversee an upturn in results. United have lost five of his eight league games in charge.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the trip to Anfield, Amorim said his side lack leaders. Discussing the decision to trigger a one-year option in Harry Maguire’s contract, the United boss called upon the defender to step up and lead by example.

“We are happy to continue with Harry,” said Amorim.

“We will trigger our option. He needs to improve as a leader because we are starving for leaders on the pitch.”

Amorim’s side take on the Premier League leaders this weekend with Liverpool having lost just once in all competitions. The Merseysiders are six points clear in the title race and top the Champions League standings. However, Amorim is confident his side can ‘win any game’.

“In football, in one game, anything can happen. If you talk about the season, every time the best win. In the moment they are better than us but we can win any game.

“We have to focus not on the context but on the performance, what we have to do is the simple things. We need to improve the simple things to play these kinds of games.”
