Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim rued a ‘disconnected’ eight minute spell which ultimately saw his side crash out of the Carabao Cup against Tottenham Hotspur.
United were 1-0 down at half-time, before very quickly trailing 3-0 by the 54th minute. Two calamitous mistakes by Fraser Forster allower Joshua Zirkzee and Jonny Evans to be one away from a comeback.
But Heung-min Son ended the seven-goal thriller and dumped the visitors out of the cup.
Despite the exit, Amorim was convinced his side were the best team throughout: “We disconnected at the start of second half. We were the best team throughout the game but they were more clinical. You could see we were comfortable and dominating possession. It was the last shot, where they scored two goals. We need to move forward.”
There were some positives for United, especially early in the game they had periods of control.
But Amorim said he can’t look at the positives straight after defeat: “Tonight there is nothing I can say that is good. Tomorrow I can reflect. We need to take a night to think. We cannot think that winning one silverware makes everything ok.”
Even in defeat, Amorim made his long term stance for success clear after the game: “Our goal is to win the Premier League. I don’t know how long it will take.”
It’s clear that there are serious problems all throughout the squad. Even United’s second keeper, Altay Bayindir, who rarely gets a game, made errors.
Out of a domestic cup competition and in indifferent form going into the busy festive period, talk of the title may yet be some way off.
