Manchester United fans were fully anticipating a 13th Premier League defeat this afternoon after the side trailed 2-0 until the 72nd minute.

The Red Devils were played off the park by an Everton team instilled with renewed confidence since David Moyes re-took the reins.

It marked United’s final trip to Goodison Park, and what a show the clubs put on to commemorate the occasion – though both were undoubtedly left feeling aggrieved come the full-time whistle. Everton could’ve easily nicked more than two goals during their dominant first-half showing, which left the visitors fully penned in and unable to catch their breath when up against the press.

Then, after Bruno Fernandes’ set-piece heroics halved the deficit in the closing stages, the tide turned in United’s favour. Attack after attack and shot after shot eventually paid dividends when Manuel Ugarte latched onto the end of a loose ball and struck it past the unaware Jordan Pickford, with the Uruguayan registering his first goal contribution in the Premier League.

As for Fernandes, he’s now reached double figures in goals and assists in each of his five full seasons at Old Trafford, as confirmed by StatmanDave. He currently boasts 10 goals and 12 assists in 38 appearances so far this campaign, yet again cementing his status as the team’s most reliable and impactful midfield maestro.

The skipper was singled out by Samuel Luckhurst for his stellar efforts and for steadying himself after such a turbulent affair on Merseyside. The Manchester Evening News journalist said on X/Twitter: “Fernandes’ reaction there was impeccable: sees a possible match-winning shot tipped over, leaps up immediately and sprints over to take the corner. He’d been abysmal for an hour but has turned this game on its head.”

Next up for United is a league clash at home to Ipswich Town on Wednesday, followed by a fifth-round FA Cup tie vs Fulham.
