Ruben Amorim has defended Bruno Fernandes amid comments criticising the midfielder’s captaincy at Manchester United.
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane was critical of Fernandes this week, during a heated argument with Ian Wright on The Overlap podcast.
When Wright had said Fernandes ‘saved’ United during their 2-2 draw at Everton last weekend, Keane hit back and questioned the player’s leadership qualities.
“Save us? They’re 15th in the league and he’s saving them? Praise the lord,” Keane said.
“You have to have a starting point. I go back to it all – talent is not enough. Bruno’s a talented player, but talent’s not enough. You talk to me [about] who you were in a dressing room with. ‘Tony Adams was this’, ‘Tony Adams was that’. Yeah, because he was a fighter. Bruno’s not a fighter.
“You’ve got young players. You have to look at somebody and go ‘I like what he does’.
“They all can’t put the ball in the top of the net from 25 yards, I get that. But you want someone who is going ‘lads, are you with me?”‘
“Was Tony Adams the most talented player in that Arsenal dressing room? So, why do you look up to Tony Adams and go ‘listen, I’ve got a lot of time for him’?
“And what did he do with his leadership? Leadership is action. Leadership to me is about action.”
Speaking ahead of Manchester United’s FA Cup tie with Fulham this weekend, Amorim said his opinion on Fernandes was the ‘opposite’ of Keane’s. He also pointed that it’s his view that is the most important at Old Trafford.
“I heard about that. I have a different opinion. Bruno is really important for us and the club. He is playing well in a difficult context. He wants always the responsibility,” Amorim said.
“I know sometimes as a captain he does things with his arms but most of all it is a lot of frustration for this year and the last year. He wants to win and sometimes it is hard to deal with that frustration.
“Everyone has an opinion. Roy Keane has big standards from his time at the club and it is normal to have an opinion. I have an opposite opinion and I think my opinion is more important than Roy Keane’s because I am the coach.”
