Ruben Amorim has insisted he remains ‘really confident’ in Andre Onana despite the goalkeeper’s errors in Manchester United’s draw at Lyon.

Onana was at fault for both Lyon goals during the 2-2 draw with the French side in their Europa League quarter-final first leg on Thursday. The Cameroonian failed to deal with Thiago Almada’s free-kick for the opener, before United turned the game around through goals from Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee.

However, another error from Onana gifted Lyon a late equaliser. The goalkeeper failed to hold Corentin Tolisso’s stoppage-time strike with Rayan Cherki slamming in the rebound.

Onana’s errors came in a week when the 29-year-old had been in the headlines, engaging in a war of words with Lyon midfielder Nemenja Matic. After dismissive comments from Onana about Lyon’s quality, Matic hit back, branding Onana as ‘one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history’.

Speaking at full-time, Amorim was asked whether the pre-game build-up and crowd had impacted Onana.

“I don’t know, that can happen. The best thing is to look at the goals and all the actions that Andre has had in the game and to talk with [goalkeeper coaches Jorge] Vital and Craig [Mawson]. This is the best way to help any player – to focus on the game, what happened, what we need to improve and then put the player [in] again.

“There’s nothing I can say to Andre in this moment that will help him. So the most important thing is to be natural. And then when the time comes, I will choose the best 11 to play. But I’m really confident in Andre.

“If you look at the season, I’ve made more mistakes than the players during these last months. It happens”.

“It can happen if you play football and a lot of games, that you will make mistakes”.
