Within the world of sport there is often mutual respect shown across disciplines. Therefore, it is no surprise that when former light-welterweight world champion Amir Khan met former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, both men clearly recognised the other’s status.

Khan was keen to share the video of this meeting on social media, but it was his caption which has provoked the greatest response.

It appears the former Olympic silver-medalist has simply cut and pasted from the Scottish managerial icon’s wikipedia page!

Khan tweeted: “Lovely to meet Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester Old Trafford Stadium. Best known for managing Manchester United from 1986 to 2013. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest football managers of all time.”

Typical replies were comments such as, “Thanks for the description Amir was wondering who it was,” “I was wondering who it was,” and “thanks for the backstory.”

Another tweeted: “I didn’t have a clue what he was famous for before this clarification. Thanks Amir,” with another telling it like it is “copied and pasted from wikipedia.”

However, there were others who used it to champion Ferguson as the greatest British manager of all time.

There are those who point to Bob Paisley’s trophy haul at Anfield, including three European Cups, but Ferguson’s advocates will point to his success at Aberdeen as well as at Old Trafford and his amazing longevity.

One fan tweeted: “He is the greatest manager of all time,” with another simply tweeting “GOAT.”

The nature of the exchange is also picked up on with Khan playfully patting Ferguson’s stomach, not a gesture many would have been confident of getting away with in the past given the Scotsman’s no nonsense attitude.

As ever on social media, we get detractors of the protagonists coming out with one individual referring to Khan’s “spaghetti legs and glass jaw,” a somewhat disrespectful comment given Khan’s achievements in the ring.

However, it is clear at the end both men have a healthy respect for each other as they pose with clenched fists.

Khan has often shown an interest in football, mentioning both United and his hometown club Bolton Wanderers in the past.
