Nicolás Benedetti will be out for between four to six weeks, with the América midfielder set to undergo knee surgery on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old sustained the injury during Monday’s 3-2 defeat at León.

Las Águilas confirmed the bad news on their official Twitter account.

The post stated: “Club América reports that player Nicolás Benedetti’s right knee evaluation showed an injury to the medial meniscus which requires surgical repair. It will be carried out tomorrow.

“Estimated recovery time is four to six weeks.”

It is a cruel blow for the player, with the non-contact injury occurring in the process of winning possession and setting up Henry Martín to put the visitors 2-1 ahead.

Benedetti had only recently returned to first-team action after incurring a serious knee injury while away on U-23 duty for Colombia in February.

The damage to his cruciate ligament and external meniscus meant that the former Deportivo Cali man has hardly played any football for the Azulcrema this season.

This latest setback could rule Benedetti out of the rest of the Guard1anes 2021 campaign, depending on how far América progress in La Liguilla.

However it pans out, he’ll certainly be hoping for better luck on the injury front in the New Year.
