América defender Miguel Layún has apologised for his reaction to being sent off in the latter stages of Saturday’s defeat to Atlético San Luis.
With the Azulcrema trailing 3-0 at home, the veteran right-back stood on Facundo Waller’s leg in the 85th minute.
The officials decided it was a red-card offence, though replays suggested it may well have been an accidental incident.
But Layún’s furious reaction, in which he berated the fourth official, kicked away a ball and mouthed to the camera is undoubtedly the bigger issue.
On Sunday, the veteran right-back took to Twitter to address the fallout.
“Sorry to all of you for yesterday’s reaction, it’s not the example I want to show my children or anyone,” the 33-year-old posted.
“I am extremely passionate but I have to learn, yesterday my blood boiled and I think that in those moments one has to know how to make a difference in another way.”
In a follow-up tweet, Layún admitted his heated interaction with the officials was ill-advised.
“I also apologise to the referees for my words, as I respect their work very much.
“My frustration stemmed from never having the slightest intention of stepping on Weller, he was off balance and I wasn’t even seeing him.
“Without further ado, thank you all and we will get ahead!”
América managed to score twice after Layún’s departure, but that couldn’t prevent them falling to a second loss in their opening three Clausura games.
