Although they weren’t able to complete the Bicampeonato by winning both the Apertura and Clausura tournaments, América will face Tigres in the Campeón de Campeones on 14 July in Carson, California.
Two days later, Cruz Azul will face Necaxa at the same location in the Supercopa MX. América would have featured in this match pitting the two latest Copa MX champions but were replaced by last year’s winners, Necaxa, due to their Campeón de Campeones participation.
América lifted the 2018 Liga MX Apertura trophy when they defeated Cruz Azul 2-0 on aggregate.
Tigres won the 2019 Liga MX Clausura title by defeating Club León 1-0 on aggregate following Sunday’s 0-0 draw.
This match will decide the ‘true’ champions of Mexico and Tigres are the three-time defending champions, having defeated Santos Laguna, Chivas, and Pachuca.
However, this match will likely feel like a pre-season match, as América will be without Agustín Marchesín, Bruno Valdez, Mateus Uribe, Guido Rodríguez, Renato Ibarra and Andrés Ibargüen, as they will take part in this summer’s Copa America.
América last won the Campeón de Campeones in 2005 when they defeated Pumas 2-1 when the competition was played over two legs. It should be noted that the Campeón de Campeones was not played between 2007 and 2014.
América last featured in this match in 2015, when they dropped a 1-0 contest against Santos Laguna.
