Roger Martínez struck deep in stoppage time to earn América a dramatic victory over Atlético San Luis on Saturday.
Scorer: Martínez 90+7′
A sharp turn and shot from América striker Henry Martín forced a fingertip save from Atlético goalkeeper Andrés Sánchez Rodríguez on the half hour.
That was as close as the visitors came in a first-half in which they enjoyed 65% of possession. The game threatened to spill out of control at times, with both sides guilty of unnecessarily aggressive challenges.
Atlético had a strong claim for a penalty after the 90-minute mark after the ball hit the hands of América pair Sebastián Cáceres and Mario Osuna in quick succession.
After a lengthy VAR review, it was decided that neither had committed a hand ball offence.
To add salt into the wound for the hosts, substitute Martínez hit the winner with a mazy dribble and finish in the extra time that had been added on for the penalty check.
The victory sees the Azulcrema stretch their lead at the top of the Apertura to six points over Atlas.
