On Tuesday morning, Club América officially announced the acquisition of Spanish defender Jorge Meré.
Meré arrives from Bundesliga outfit FC Köln for an undisclosed fee believed to be around the $1m mark.
After arriving from Sporting Gijon in 2017 for a Gijon club-record €7m ($8m) fee, Meré made 96 appearances for the Effzeh in all competitions.
Álvaro Fidalgo played with Meré when they were both children in Spain and welcomed his childhood friend to the club.
“I remember it was September 2004 if my memory serves me right, I met you there, I remember when we played ball together.
“We shared from the first moment, unforgettable moments. Life took us down different paths but we remained friends from a distance.
“I’m telling you that I am in the biggest team in Mexico and it is a feeling that cannot be described. Here, you will always find passion, courage and glory.
“Now, football has reunited us in this exciting new adventure. We are Eagles, ready to take flight.”
The centre-back was once called up to the Spain national team in 2016 for a friendly match against Bosnia.
