América were in irresistible form as they tore apart Cruz Azul in a completely one-sided Clásico Joven on Saturday.

América drew fist blood on the quarter-hour mark at the Estadio Azteca when Richard Sánchez’s swerving effort from distance left Cruz goalkeeper Sebastián Jurado completely wrong-footed.

And the Azulcrema added to their lead after Jonathan Rodríguez, facing his former club for the first time, tapped home from close range after excellent work by Henry Martín on the left flank.

La Máquina were desperately unlucky not to pull one back when they were denied twice in quick succession by the woodwork. Juan Escobar was the first to rattle the frame of the goal before Ángel Romero did likewise with the rebound.

The game could have been dead and buried before half time if a shot from Alejandro Zendejas did not bounce off the upright.

And Zendejas was involved in another major incident before the interval when Carlos Rotondi had his headed goal chalked off by VAR for a push on the América attacker.

As if that wasn’t enough drama, Rafael Baca rightly saw red for Cruz in stoppage time for a dangerous lunge on Martīn from behind. From the resulting free-kick, Diego Valdés powered a shot home to put Las Águilas in complete control of the derby.

Martín, Álvaro Fidalgo, substitute Federico Viñas and Salvador Reyes added further goals in the second half as Cruz were helpless to prevent their neighbours cruising to victory.

The win moves América up to fourth in the Apertura table, while the brutal loss leaves Cruz Azul second from bottom.
