Richard Sánchez produced a moment of first-half magic to help América win their Clásico Capitalino against Pumas on Sunday.
Scorers: R Sánchez 36′, Laínez 90 + 8′
The Paraguay international stole possession by high pressing before arrowing a magnificent chip from the right sideline over the stranded Alfredo Talavera.
Pumas came agonisingly close to equalising through a brilliant chip of their own just after the hour mark.
Goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa could only watch as Rogério’s effort sailed over his head and cannoned back off the upright.
Substitute Henry Martín looked to have doubled the Azulcrema’s advantage with just under 10 minutes to go, but the tap-in was chalked off by VAR for an offside offence in the build up.
Mauro Laínez did put the cherry on top by finishing from a narrow angle in the eighth minute of stoppage time.
The win – América’s first in four league games – sees Las Águilas move three points clear of Atlas at the top of the Apertura table.
