Santiago Cáseres has found himself out on loan again, this time back at former club Vélez Sarsfield in his native Argentina.

The defensive midfielder joined Villarreal on a five-year deal from El Fortín back in 2018.

However, Cáseres struggled to settle at the Spanish club and subsequently moved to América on a year-long loan deal in January 2020.

It was hoped he would be able to fill the hole left by his countryman Guido Rodríguez, who had just left Las Águilas for Real Betis.

Unfortunately Cáseres failed to convince then manager Miguel Herrera during his stint with the Azulcrema, resulting in the Liga MX side declining to take up their option to buy.

With Villarreal not interested in reintegrating him, efforts have been ongoing to find a new home for the 23-year-old.

A solution was found just in time to register the player before the transfer window closed in Argentina.

A statement released by Villarreal read: “Villarreal CF and Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield have reached an agreement for the loan of midfielder Santiago Cáseres, who will play for the Argentine club until December 31, 2021.

“The agreement includes the option to buy by the Submarine during the next summer transfer market in Spain.”

Vélez Sarsfield are currently managed by former Southampton and Independiente boss Mauricio Pellegrino.
