The hosts opened the scoring inside the opening two minutes at the Estadio Nemesio Díez.

América were guilty of lazy defending on a corner, allowing Raúl López time and space to whip in a cross for Óscar Ortega to head home.

The visitors equalised just four minutes later when a pinpoint Luis Fuentes cross was sent to the net by Henry Martín courtesy of another quality header.

Toluca retook the lead before the break with another fantastic headed effort. Claudio Baeza clipped the ball into the danger area before Braian Samudio produced a stunning leap and generated incredible power to beat goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Claudio Baeza was sent off for a second yellow card in the 56th minute, but Toluca made light of the setback by extending their advantage when López and Ortega linked up again for the latter to glance home his second of the night.

There was time for further drama late on when América lost Sebastián Cáceres to a second caution after a hand ball in the area, but the spot kick was sent wide.

América still top the table after the defeat, but they only lead Los Diablos Rojos by the minimum goal difference.
