MIAMI – Following the international break, women’s professional leagues in Concacaf returned to action as clubs continue their quest to achieve the very best within the regular season.

Angel City gets first NWSL win of the year

Angel City FC obtained their first victory of their NWSL season, 1-0 away at the Chicago Red Stars, on Saturday afternoon. An own goal in the 40’ by defender Maximiliane Rall decided the match. The play came from an Angel City free kick by Claire Emslie, when the goal came as Rall tried to clear a ball and pushed it past Chicago goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher. The home loss marked the first defeat of the season for the Red Stars.

Kansas City Current continue at the top of the standings on 10 points, following a 1-1 draw at reigning champions Gotham FC. North Carolina FC and Washington Spirit are second and third, respectively, at nine points. Chicago Red Stars is in fourth place with 7 points.

America hands Tigres first defeat of Liga MX Femenil regular season

Tigres UANL, the defending champions in Liga MX Femenil, also lived an upset on Monday evening when Club America ended their 12-match unbeaten run. The Mexico City took a 2-1 victory at the Estadio Universitario to hand Las Amazonas its first defeat of the Clausura 2024 season.

The Amazonas got the first goal of the match in the 19’ thanks to the efforts of forward Maricarmen Reyes, finding the net after filtering through the Águilas defense.

America pulled one back in the 38’ from the penalty spot with a conversion from Katty Martinez. The America forward leads the Golden Boot race with 14 goals and extended her tally as the all-time top scorer of Liga MX Femenil.

America took the lead in the 49’ after an own goal by Konya Plummer, who wasn’t able to clear the ball in Tigres' area. This is the first time the Aguilas have defeated Tigres in the regular season. Both have booked their place in the Liguilla.

Alajuelense gets rivalry victory in Costa Rica

Costa Rica had its women’s Clásico on Sunday afternoon, which Liga Deportiva Alajuelense won 3-1 at Saprissa to secure the first place of the Apertura 2024.

Anyela Mesen struck first for Las Leonas in the 18’ shooting past the Saprissa goalkeeper. Mesen showed up again in the 39’ to earn her brace, sending a banger to the back of the net from just inside the right side of the penalty area.

Carolina Venegas pulled one back for Saprissa in the 55’ off a header from a corner kick to give her team a boost in the second half. Kenia Rangel closed the game for Alajuelense in the 88’ with a hit from long range.
