América got one over Clásico Nacional rivals Chivas with a comfortable 3-1 victory in a friendly that coincided with the international break on Sunday.
Scorers: Zaldívar 23′; Moreno 9′, Damm 58′, dos Santos 72’
It was América who struck first at the Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta but there was a hint of fortune about the finish.
Attacking midfielder Iker Moreno joined attack at the perfect time and his shot made its way to the net via a couple of deflections off Chivas defenders.
The Flock hit back midway through the first half when Angel Zaldívar powered home a close-range header off Pavel Pérez’s corner.
It would remain that way until the break and it was shortly before the hour mark that the Azulcrema retook the lead. Jürgen Damm showed lovely composure to cut in on the right flank and fire home a low shot off his left foot.
And Las Águilas were able to stretch their lead through Jonathan dos Santos.
Again there was some fortune involved as the midfielder’s shot from 20 yards took a wicked deflection to leave goalkeeper Miguel Jiménez flat-footed.
Both América and Chivas will return to Liga MX action next weekend as their regular Apertura seasons campaigns conclude with games against Puebla and Cruz Azul respectively.
