América staged a remarkable comeback to win 4-3 and secure three vital points against Atlético San Luis in the battle for play-off places in eLiga MX.
With Santiago Cáseres at the controls, the Azulcrema found themselves ripped apart in the opening exchanges and 3-0 down inside the opening 22 minutes.
A brace from Diego Pineda and another goal from Nico Ibañez had Atlético’s controller Antonio Portales firmly in the box seat.
However, Las Águilas finally grew into the game and created a succession of chances before Roger Martínez pulled a goal back four minutes from the break.
The decision by Cáseres to change formation from a 4-4-1-1 to a 4-5-1 proved crucial as América continued to dominate proceedings after the interval.
Giovani dos Santos found his range in the 62nd minute before a spectacular volley by Andrés Ibargüen 20 minutes later had the teams level and set up a grandstand finish.
The thrilling comeback was completed four minutes from time Henry Martín rifled to the bottom corner of the net.
Both sides had proper chances to score in the dying moments, but the scoreline remained to same to allow América move into sixth place with a game in hand over most of their play-off rivals.
Atlético San Luis remain in third place and could face a rematch against the Azulcrema soon should both teams maintain their current positions in the table.
