Ex-Milan midfielder Massimo Ambrosini believes Stefano Pioli’s disappointment after a 4-2 loss to Monza means the Rossoneri still hoped to catch Inter at the top of the Serie A table.

Milan suffered their first defeat since December on Sunday, losing 4-2 against Monza at the U-Power Stadium.

The Rossoneri boss, Pioli, was visibly disappointed during a post-match interview with DAZN, so former Rossoneri midfielder Ambrosini offered his view on the manager’s quotes after the game.

“Let me say that the disappointment we saw in Pioli’s eyes and words means that probably Milan were keeping an eye up there,” Ambrosini told DAZN.

“They had the ambition to finish at the top or at least get to the second-leg derby with Inter on their targets.”

Milan remain third in the Serie A table, two points below second-placed Juventus. Inter are 11 points above the Rossoneri but the Nerazzurri also have a game in hand, so Milan’s title hopes are predictably gone.

This means the Diavoli must focus on the Europa League as their only target for 2023-24.

“They must go as far as possible and grant a comfortable qualification,” concluded Ambrosini.

Milan beat Rennes 3-0 in the first leg of the Europa League knockout playoff on Thursday. They will play the second leg in France next week, while the next Serie A match is against Atalanta at San Siro on February 25.
