Amancio Amaro today celebrates his birthday, the first in his role as honorary Real Madrid president. On 16 October 1939, one of our club's biggest legends was born in A Coruña. He enjoyed a 14-season playing spell at Real Madrid between 1962 and 1976, during which time he lifted 13 trophies: one European Cup, nine league titles and a trio of Spanish Cups. One of his crowning moments came in the final of La Sexta, when he netted Real Madrid's first goal against Partizan following a sublime piece of play in which he dribbled past his man, before planting a low shot past the goalkeeper.

He was a role model at Real Madrid for over a decade, clocking up 471 appearances and notching 155 goals to become one of the leading forwards in the world game. He also played an instrumental role in the Spanish national team that clinched the 1964 European Championship. His influence at the club would later continue in a coaching capacity, as he won the second-tier title with Castilla in the 1983/84 season and was one of the masterminds behind the Quinta del Buitre.

Honorary president Following on from all of the aforementioned achievements with Real Madrid, he was unanimously elected honorary president at the club's Extraordinary General Assembly held on 2 October. Amancio spoke of his delight at taking up the role: "This appointment is an honour for me. My teammates and friends Alfredo Di Stéfano and Paco Gento have come before me and it is an honour for me to occupy this position. The club always comes ahead of any individual and that is what makes this club so great. This is the dream way to end my career."
