Manchester United are planning for Amad to “undergo surgery” next week with the Ivorian winger’s season “almost over”, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Ruben Amorim had referenced the team has experienced “problems” in training this week during his pre-match press-conference for this afternoon’s match against Tottenham Hotspur.
While the Portuguese coach did not specify individuals, it emerged yesterday that Amad has suffered a serious ankle injury and the 22-year-old’s season was now in jeopardy.
It constitutes a devastating blow for the Red Devils as the Ivorian international had, at times, single-handedly carried the side’s attack this season. Everything positive United produce in the opposition half invariably has the winger’s imprint on it, whether it’s a goal, an assist, a dribble, a pass, or a press.
Equally, Amorim had found great success deploying Amad as a right wing-back with neither Diogo Dalot nor Noussair Mazraoui able to offer the same threat down the channel of their younger teammate.
There is a strong argument Amad is the team’s most important player right now. But according to Romano, the 22-year-old’s season is “almost over”; and so, too, may United’s, given the paucity of options in the frontline now.
The Italian transfer guru reveals the club’s “current plan is for Amad Diallo to undergo surgery next week”, illustrating just how serious this ankle injury sustained in training is.
Tweet: “Understand Man United’s current plan is for Amad Diallo to undergo surgery next week after suffering ankle injury. His season is almost over and full focus will be on getting in best shape for next season.”
Crucially, Romano states, Amad’s “full focus” now lies in “getting in [the] best shape for next season”, rather than an expectant return before this campaign is over.
And with United harbouring ambitions to go deep into the Europa League and FA Cup, with little to play for in the Premier League, the vague prospect, however distant, of the club’s best attacker returning before the end of the season would have been a boost.
However, it appears Amorim will now have to rely on a forward line comprised of Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund, and Joshua Zirkzee to fire United to success in the cups. The Peoples Person is sceptical of the viability of this approach to say the least.
Amad will join Lisandro Martinez in the treatment room at Old Trafford after the Argentine defender’s own serious knee injury required surgery in a heart-breaking double blow for the team.
The 27-year-old is expected to require at least six months of rehabilitation, but could potentially take as long as a year to fully return to the fold.
