With plenty on the line, Alonso discussed the fitness and form of several top players, including Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo.

He also praised some emerging names in the squad, while stressing the need for a strong finish in the group.

Mbappe and Bellingham’s recovery

Kylian Mbappe continues to recover and was seen with his boots on for the first time since his injury. Alonso admitted he was glad to see the forward back on the pitch but stressed that Mbappe is still not fit enough to perform at the competitive level required.

“We talked after training. He’s progressing, but not quite there yet. Hopefully, we can count on him if we reach the next stage,” Alonso said.

As for Jude Bellingham, who will be sidelined after surgery, Alonso made it clear how important the Englishman is to the team. “He’s key for us. He creates chances and finishes them too. We want him back in the best shape,” the manager added.

When asked about David Alaba, Alonso confirmed the Austrian defender is taking longer than expected to recover. “It’s a slower process. We need to be patient and go step by step,” he explained.

Praise for Rodrygo, Brahim, and Huijsen

Xabi Alonso also shed light on Rodrygo’s recent absence from the starting XI. “It was a technical decision. He’s eager and training well. He’s a special player,” Alonso clarified.

He had high praise for young defender Dean Huijsen, calling him a “pillar” for the team. “He brings personality and leadership, even after just two days with us. He’s got the respect of the squad and has a lot of potential,” Alonso noted.

Brahim Diaz was also singled out as a game-changer. “He’s very competitive and smart on the pitch. Whether he starts or comes on later, he can make a difference. I trust him completely,” said the coach.

Alonso hinted at using Valverde in different roles, saying the Uruguayan offers valuable flexibility.

“I have some ideas about him, but he’s a player who can play all over the field, closer to the wing or in the double pivot… He gives us a lot of flexibility.”

Real Madrid’s goal against Salzburg is clear – secure a win and finish top of the group. “We want to do it playing with a full team, against a very dynamic side,” Alonso concluded.
