“[Max] Allegri alone and confused as Monza make history” wrote Monday’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport after Juventus lost 1-0 to Monza, while Corriere dello Sport called the situation a “genuine crisis.”

As if things for Allegri and Juve weren’t bad enough after back-to-back defeats at the hands of PSG and Benfica in the Champions League, his team looked stifled and lacking in cohesion during a match that was a golden opportunity to ease the pressure on a team and a coach under pressure.

Monza have just begun their first ever season in Serie A, and in their first six matches of the campaign had managed to take just one point from the 18 available to them. What’s more, ahead of the weekend they’d just sacked their manager Giovanni Stroppa and promoted 38-year-old youth team boss Raffaele Palladino to replace him.

It was Palladino’s professional debut as a coach, versus a man in who had won Serie A six times in his career and reached the Champions League final twice.

But Juve and Allegri, who was sitting alone above the bench as he served a one-match suspension for his protestations at the conclusion of the controversial 2-2 draw with Salernitana last weekend, do not seem to have the aura they once did.

Yes, Juventus had played the entire second half with ten men after Ángel di María had been sent off for lashing out at an opponent, but this simply could not be used as an excuse for a side that has been so consistently underperforming for the entire season.

Allegri’s side created just seven chances from open play in contrast to 16 from the opposition, kept the ball less than 40% of the time, and were dispossessed by Monza on seven occasions, winning the ball back themselves only five times.

CEO Maurizio Arrivabene continues to publicly support the boss, indicating in an interview with Corriere dello Sport that “Max not only has a contract but a mandate to develop the side over four years.”

Will Allegri be given more time to turn around this desperate situation at Juventus?
