Posting a video with his son on Thursday, Newcastle winger Allan Saint-Maximin showed the youngster in a full Arsenal kit. Like most of the rest of us, the 23-year-old is stuck in isolation with his family while he waits for the football to come back.
It’s hard to argue this is an accident. Perhaps he wasn’t thinking about the kit when he uploaded the video, but he certainly made the decision to get an Arsenal shirt and shorts for his son at some stage.
Most likely, this means Saint-Maximin himself is an Arsenal fan, albeit one that now plays for fellow Premier League club Newcastle.
It’s no real surprise. Saint-Maximin grew up in the era of the invincibles, after all. Not only were the Gunners hugely successful at that time, but they also had a lot of French players.
It would also explain why the winger seemed to particularly up his game against Arsenal in February. He was one of Newcastle’s best performers, despite the 4-0 defeat. We’ve all seen how Wilfried Zaha tries that little bit harder at the Emirates Stadium too.
If Saint-Maximin wants a move to Arsenal, he probably needs to get involved in the goals a bit more often. He’s only up to three goals and four assists for the season so far, settling into his debut PL campaign.
When he’s on his game, though, his dribbling ability makes him a scary player to come up against.
