The Amsterdam side dominated the pitch inside the Stadion Galgenwaard, but a resilient and clinical USV Hercules side pulled off a massive upset.

Ajax had a staggering 76% possession of the ball and 28 shots to 14, but Tim Pieters took his best two chances when they arrived to help the amateur club (who play in the Dutch fourth division) earn a historic win.

Goalkeeper Diant Ramaj first mistimed a save, and the ball was cut back to the wide-open Hercules winger, who drilled home into an empty net.

A slik team-move then undid Ajax a second time, and Pieters secured a brace by blasting home into the far right corner from outside the box.

Substitute Brian Brobbey slammed home a late goal to halve the deficit, and the ever-reliable Chuba Akpom bundled home an equaliser to suggest maybe, maybe, Ajax could hold on.

That was until an outstretched Mats Grotenbreg redirected home an injury-time winner.

Alongside the historic win, Hercules became the first amateur side to score against the Dutch giants in the KNVB Cup since 2017.
