There was no shortage of drama as VAR dominated the headlines yet again in the Premier League.

After the opening two weeks of action, the general consensus was that changes made during the off season had led to an improvement in the quality of decision-making.

We saw the best and worst of the video technology in Saturday’s four games.

Fair? Maybe not. Entertaining? Absolutely!

Brighton ‘hand’ Manchester United three points

Brighton will maybe never quite figure out how they finished this crazy game with no points to show for their efforts.

Graham Potter’s Seagulls hit the woodwork five times before Solly March nodded home in the third minute of stoppage time to make it 2-2 and seemingly ensure a deserved draw for the hosts.

But Neil Maupay’s raised arm in the penalty area and Bruno Fernandes’ cool head from the spot combined to give Manchester United a vital away victory.

Tale of two halves as Chelsea mount comeback at West Brom

Oh, to have been a fly on the wall in the Chelsea dressing room at half time at The Hawthorns!

An error-strewn first half performance from the Blues had allowed West Brom to race into a 3-0 lead with just 27 minutes on the clock.

Credit to Frank Lampard’s men, they did turn it around with a vastly improved display after the interval.

However, Baggies’ boss Slaven Bilić had every right to frustrated with the officials’ decision to ignore Kai Havertz’s handball in the build up to Tammy Abraham’s last-gasp equaliser.

Everton ride luck to bring Eagles down to earth

Something had to give, didn’t it?

Both Crystal Palace and Everton started this game at Selhurst Park with maximum points from two games, and it was the Toffees who stayed at 100% after a fortunate win in South London.

Joel Ward had a day to forget. After already surviving one VAR check on a possible hand ball, his luck ran out when Lucas Digne’s flick on glanced the Palace defender’s right hand.

It may have been an offence by the letter of the revised hand ball laws, but it was rough justice on the Eagles.

Not that Carlo Ancelotti and his Toffees will be bothered. Richarlison did the needful from the spot to secure a 2-1 win for the high-flying Merseysiders.

Ings continues scoring streak as Saints sink Burnley

The day concluded at Turf Moor with Burnley failing to make home advantage count against Southampton.

Danny Ings, who spent four years with the Clarets earlier in his career, came back to haunt his old club as he put the finishing touch to a lovely move by the Saints to give Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men their first points of the season.

The hosts battled gamely to rescue something from the game, but will have to wait until the trip to Newcastle next weekend for a chance to stop their early season rot.
