Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez relieved for not completing his move to Chelsea last summer

Ajax star Edson Alvarez, who was a transfer target for Chelsea last summer, is relieved that his move to Stamford Bridge did not happen.

In the previous summer transfer window, Chelsea made a bid to sign the Mexican international. But, because it was late in the window, Ajax rejected the offer. The player expressed his disappointment at the decision later on. However, the tables have turned now.

It seems as if Alvarez saw how bad Chelsea became on and off the field this season and breathed a huge sigh of relief. This is not surprising because the club has been run like a circus field over the last 12 months.

Edson Alvarez relieved that his move to Chelsea didn’t happen.

Here’s what the 25-year-old said when asked if the missed Chelsea move still bothers him (h/t Voetbal International, via Football.London):

“At first, because it felt like a mental challenge. Still, I turned the switch again afterwards, because Ajax is also a big club. I also believe that everything in life happens for a reason. If you see Chelsea’s season now, for example, also with all kinds of problems, then maybe it should have been that way. And this season, however difficult, has also been educational for me.”

Alvarez’s comments may act as a warning shot to the Chelsea hierarchy to get their act together before the start of the coming transfer window.

The mistakes made in the last two windows cannot be repeated now. In fact, the club are still paying a heavy price for weird player signings in that time.

With no European football and FFP regulations on the head, Chelsea have to sell players before buying. Doing the former was anyway on the cards because the squad bloated after multiple January additions.

Although they have hired a very good manager in Mauricio Pochettino, the next step is to back the Argentine with the right finances and stability behind the scenes.

Pochettino is an elite coach who will get the best out of the players. Chelsea fans would be hoping that Todd Boehly does not interfere in footballing matters anymore.

Regarding Alvarez, all the best to him. He was disappointed for not joining us a few months ago and now the tone has changed. Just how the football players are.
