Liverpool’s return to action following the international break was far from the result fans had hoped for, with Alisson Becker openly admitting that the team lacked quality across the pitch in their 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest. The Brazilian goalkeeper was candid in his assessment of the match, attributing the loss to preventable mistakes on both ends of the field.
After a promising start under new manager Arne Slot, Liverpool’s momentum came to an abrupt halt against Nottingham Forest. A significant factor in this performance was fatigue, with seven of Liverpool’s starting XI having played the full 90 minutes for their respective national teams during the break. This tiredness was evident as the team struggled to synchronise their play, failing to build any significant rhythm.

Nottingham Forest were quick to capitalise on Liverpool’s lethargy, and it was Callum Hudson-Odoi who scored the decisive goal, leaving Alisson unsighted. Reflecting on the match, Alisson expressed his disappointment, particularly with how Liverpool allowed the visitors too much freedom.
“It was a shame, losing points at home is not good at all but the opponent today only wanted to defend and play for the long ball,” Alisson said after the game. “We gave them that too easily when they scored, it was poor defensively from us.”
Despite dominating possession and having more shots on target, Liverpool failed to make their chances count. Alisson admitted that the team lacked energy and sharpness in both attack and defence, stating, “We couldn’t create much, we had a lack of quality today, we needed more energy. It is three points we have lost today unnecessarily.”
The Reds managed five shots on target compared to Forest’s three, but their xG (expected goals) of just 0.87 highlighted their toothlessness in front of goal.

Credit must also be given to Nottingham Forest, who defended valiantly throughout the match. As Alisson noted, “They defended great, they threw themselves in front of the ball.” The visitors recorded 29 clearances and won the duel count (55-44) and tackles (15-9), proving a tough defensive unit for Liverpool to break down.
Thankfully, Liverpool can look forward to their next challenge, with Champions League action on the horizon.
